Highest-Paying Nursing Jobs in the US: Compare the Real Paths

A high hourly figure can look irresistible. But a travel contract with temporary housing costs, a PRN shift without benefits and a salaried advanced-practice role are not interchangeable. The better question is: what does this path pay after training, expenses and time off, and can I do the work sustainably?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a May 2024 median of $93,600 for RNs, and a $132,050 median for the combined nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife and nurse practitioner group. These are national occupational medians across experience levels, not new-grad offers; the advanced-practice figure is a combined group, not the salary of each role. Which settings are hiring nurses?

Hospitals are only one option. The BLS describes RN employment in physicians' offices, home healthcare, nursing care facilities, outpatient clinics and schools as well as hospitals. A high-demand setting does not mean every unit has openings today. Check the employer's current posting and the actual patient population. Browse home care roles, nursing home roles, telehealth and all open jobs to compare real requirements.

Where can nurses earn more?

Pay varies by state, metropolitan area, employer, shift and contract. A higher nominal state wage may be offset by housing or commuting costs. Use the BLS State & Area Data section for the role you want, then check actual local offers. Compare annual guaranteed hours, employer-paid benefits, weekend differentials and license renewal costs. For a 13-week travel contract, ask whether hours are guaranteed and which housing costs you will personally carry. Never compare a travel weekly package to a staff base wage without separating taxable wages, stipends and expenses.

How can a staff RN improve pay without another degree?

First understand the pay grid: when are raises reviewed, which experience counts, and whether specialty certification earns a differential? Float pools, internal transfers, night or weekend premiums and overtime can change compensation without immediate graduate tuition. They may also change your schedule or physical load. Ask the manager for the written policy and talk with someone doing the work. The highest gross pay is not useful if the arrangement is unsafe or unsustainable.

If further education interests you, calculate tuition, income forgone during training and the entry requirements for that role. The BLS advanced practice profile notes graduate education, state licensure and national certification requirements. There is no shortcut from an RN license to independently practicing as an APRN.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest-paying nursing job?

It depends on whether you mean hourly rate, annual income or earnings after training and expenses. Nurse anesthetist roles often appear among the highest-paying nursing paths, but require advanced education and specific eligibility; compare official occupational data rather than a single advertised shift.

Do PRN nurses always make more than staff nurses?

Not necessarily. The posted hourly rate may be higher, but PRN positions can lack benefits and predictable shifts. Compare the full annual value and cancellation policy.

Is travel nursing still worth it?

Some contracts fit experienced nurses well, but assess guaranteed hours, taxable wages, stipends, housing, insurance and cancellation clauses before deciding. A large weekly number alone is not net income.

Which states pay RNs the most?

The answer changes by year and by whether you compare mean pay, median pay or cost-adjusted earnings. Use current BLS state and metro data and actual local offers instead of relying on an outdated top-ten list.
